Stonehill Residence (1979) by Earth Form Builder - Poway

Nestled in a granite boulder field in Poway’s Green Valley, the organic architecture of the Stonehill Residence (1979) by Earth Form Builder is unlike any home in the surrounding area. Architect Robert Thiele, alongside artists James Hubbell and Rhoda Lopez, and a host of contractors working in adobe, wood and glass outperformed the expectations of their clients – who had already invested their lives in a 1960s Eichler-esque design nearby.

Arriving for the first time, visitors are struck by the organic, curvilinear adobe walls that connect the structure to it surrounding landscape. The deep scalloped eaves extend the roofline into the private 1-acre parcel at the end of a cul de sac.

As you enter the Hubbell-designed door and surrounding stained glass, you are welcomed into a circular living room anchored by a towering fireplace with the roof structure radiating off the masonry tower. Several rooms’ feature the extraordinary ceramic work of Rhoda Lopez – whether lighting or a bas-relief, her organic forms in clay connect well with the logic of the home and the sensuous curves of Hubbell’s and Thiele’s lines.

Within moments of your arrival, you will recognize how the Stonehill Residence rests amidst a quiet valley. This 4-bedroom, 2-bathroom home of 2,232 sq ft is available to tour by appointment only.
