A Southern Oregon Craftsman-inspired Mountain Home by a Cal Arts Student in the 70s
In 1973, a Cal Arts student purchased a 40-acre wooded parcel with panoramic views of Walker Mountain and surrounding hills, about 15 minutes north of Grants Pass, up a 1/4 mile driveway surrounded by trees.
The following decades would see the property transform under the incredible skill of an artist meets builder; from a modest Craftsman-inspired home into a family compound full of architectural artistry.
The main residence is filled with stained glass windows, custom cabinetry, hand shaved wood beams, and a rock walled fireplace, primarily crafted on-site from the owners' wood working shop, using materials from the surrounding mountainside.
As years went by and family expanded, the property would go on to see a detached guest suite, a standalone recreation room / gym / play room, several separate garages for vehicles, tractor, and camping trailer, various firewood and tool sheds, a barn that once housed goats and chickens, garden beds and orchard spaces, still home to everything from figs to apples, snap peas to a variety of roses.
A tennis court allowed 3 generations to learn tennis, and the backyard grass provided space for various lawn games, even a family member's wedding. The property is full of native Douglas Fir, Oak, and Jeffrey Pine trees. A stream can be heard seasonally from the kitchen window, while a more formal creek runs on the southern edge of the lot.
From when the sun rises over one set of hills, until it sets over another, the lighting and views from virtually every point of this property show exactly why this special space was selected years ago to build such a dream environment, a place which is now ready for someone else to experience and treasure…
The property is being marketed by Agents of Architecture and represented by Valerie Mall at Re/Max.
