Thomas C. Kravis, MD Residence Remodel by architect Kendrick Bangs Kellogg
Recently a fan favorite of the La Jolla Modern Home Tour, the Thomas C. Kravis, MD Residence Remodel (1976-87) is available for the first time in three decades.
Although the bones of this residence date to the 1940s, the home took its current form after Dr. Thomas Kravis purchased the property in 1970 and commissioned local, organic architecture pioneer, Kendrick Bangs Kellogg (1934-2024), to reimagine the home.
The natural wood, textured concrete, and earth tone finishes seen throughout are a reflection of Kellogg's early work. With the Kravis residence, Kellogg creatively and masterfully highlights what could be achieved on a standard-sized city lot. The most striking feature is the stacked wood fascia that frames the home's rooflines.
Kellogg's own textured concrete recipe (made with board forms, molasses and flora) originates with the interior fireplace and extends into the landscape in the form of planters, water features, seating, and garden walls.
"Any design should create and should meet the peaceful environment and peaceful nature of life." - Yum Kee Fu
As Kellogg's career evolved, so did the complexity and fluidity of his designs as seen in works such as the Gordon Residence in Pacific Beach, Yen Residence in La Jolla, and Doolittle Residence in Joshua Tree.
Located on Neptune Place in La Jolla, the Kravis Residence is comprised of 2,172 square feet of living space set upon a 5,403 sq. ft. parcel just across the street from Windansea Beach. The residence enjoys panoramic ocean and sunset views amidst its three bedrooms and three bathrooms. The primary suite, or separate 1-bed/1-bath apartment is reached via an exterior stairway and enjoys its own rooftop deck.
The nature-inspired Asian details throughout the home were harmoniously crafted in 1998 following a two-year renovation by architect Yum Kee Fu and his wife Susan, the parents of the current owner. The artistry of their design is beautifully showcased in the upstairs suite where the artisan-crafted interior doors feature unique wood inlays inspired by Asian art.
The current owners have treasured their home for 26 years and use it as a private residence as well as a vacation rental.
