The Wayne & Barbara Chapman Remodel (1977-79) by architect Kendrick Bangs Kellogg
The residence was originally a (circa 1960) tract home in the seaside village of Solana Beach. Following their marriage in 1969, the young couple of artists hired the Mission Beach organic architect to reimagine the site of their modest home (they had purchased for $10,900).
As with other clients of the 1970s and ‘80s, Kellogg would design the remodel (of an existing home) and Wayne would manage construction – often working the site with their own hands. Along with a friend, Wayne sourced the utility poles and thousands of board feet of rough-sawn redwood from Lumber & Builder’s Supply Company, nearby in Solana Beach.
The original house was expanded into multiple bright and spacious rooms including Wayne’s ceramic studio. Kellogg’s design flair including his unique fireplaces are everywhere – as if his design DNA was on full display from the curb through to every unique moment unveiled to its visitors.
Upon arrival, traverse the uniquely tranquil, lush Japanese-inspired gardens and through the hand-carved doors of the 3,900 sq. ft. tri-level home of wood and glass. The Chapman Residence is for sale for the first time - and for many first-time visitors, the ocean view from the living room is only one factor among a host reasons to linger and take in the sensory experience of aroma and texture as well as visual and auditory delight throughout.
Wayne, along with his wife and fellow artist, Barbara Chapman lived in the home surrounded by ceramics, textiles, and woodworking from around the world, all the textures of their lives shaped by fine art, draft and design. Its legacy and future will be in the hands of its next stewards, caretakers – not simply residents of the space.
